Hilliard Woolard

Hilliard Lee Woolard, 69, died Saturday, March 25, 2023.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at 11 a.m. in the Friends in Fellowship Christian Church worship center, 962 Jack Jones Road, Winterville.

Mr. Woolard was a native of Beaufort County and lived in Grifton, NC, with his wife Lynn. Together they loved serving the Lord and spending time with friends and family. They especially enjoyed going to and watching their nieces’ and nephews’ sports events and programs.

His early life included a love for flying – a hobby taught and nourished by his brother Stanley. Not only was he academically gifted, he also excelled in athletics for the Washington High School Pam Pack. He was a brother in the Sigma Nu fraternity when in school at UNC Chapel Hill and a Tarheel for life!

An avid reader, he found his career niche operating the Pitt County Bookmobile for the Sheppard Memorial Library system. There, he fulfilled his love for people and sharing his knowledge and love for books.

He was a member of Friends in Fellowship Christian Church in Winterville. Over the years he taught the young adult Sunday school class, served as worship leader, was part of the choir and worship praise team, and served as a deacon and elder.

Mr. Woolard was preceded in death by his parents Hillard Woolard and Rosalie C. Woolard; a brother, Stanley E. Woolard; and brothers-in-law William Claudius (Billy) Jenkins, Jr. and Shelton R. (Boogie) Dixon. He is survived by sisters, Judith W. Jenkins and Hilda W. Dixon of Greenville; sister-in-law Velma Gurganus; nephews Bill Jenkins (Candice) and Stan Woolard (Lisa); nieces Debra Roberson (Rusty), Tammy Flynn (Joe), Wendy Baker (Jason), Krisi Nisbet (Heath) and Sarah Allen (Tyler); and 15 great nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Friends in Fellowship Christian Church and other times at the Woolard home in Grifton. A celebration of life will follow immediately after the visitation at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends in Fellowship Christian Church, PO Box 2444, Winterville, NC 28590, The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice House, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, or the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC.

I had the opportunity to see Hilliard at last year's reunion for the first time in decades.  It was so good to see him as well as the other members of our class.  As you can see in some of the photos of the reunion, Hilliard posed with Johnny Rodman, Johnny Brown and of course Larry Smithwick, the guys that scored the points for the Pam Pack our senior year.

As a member of the yearbook committee I contributed to the game writeups and Hilliard was described as "Mr. Everywhere".  Hilliard was not the tallest, fastest or biggest, but he used what he had to make a difference to outcomes of several games.  It was an honor to be on the field with him.

God's speed Hilliard...

After reading Gib's post, it's pretty hard to add much about Hilliard, "Mr. Everywhere #41."  Hilliard was not only a teammate of mine in high school but most of all, a great friend.  I last saw Hilliard when a few of us "senior" teammates attended Senior Night for a Washington Pam Pack football game.  The five of us had a great time that night.  At Halftime Hilliard made sure we were all individually recognized from the pressbox. Fly High, Hilliard!
