Mr. Floyd Shelton Cherry, age 56, a resident of 6650 Cherry Run Road, Washington, NC died Friday August 14, 2009 at his home.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday August 19, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Pastor Steve Dail. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. John Tynch, Tommy Alligood, Bryan Cherry, Alex Woolard, Kenny Fulford and Mike Elzey will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Miguel Castro and Paul Vorwerk. 

Mr. Shelton was born in Beaufort County on March 22, 1953 son of the late Floyd Reid Cherry and Opal Whichard Cherry who survives. He was a 1971 graduate of Washington High School. On November 12, 1982 he married the former Peggy Joyce Alligood. He was a textile worker at National Spinning and a member of Grimesland Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Shelton enjoyed fishing and playing music on his mandolin. He was happily awaiting the birth of his first two grandchildren, one in December and the other in February. 

Surviving along with Mr. Shelton's wife, Peggy of the home, are his mother, Opal Cherry of Washington; a son, Travis Cherry and his wife Brandis of Washington; a daughter, Valerie Cherry and her fiance Clint Asby of Washington; a brother, Stanley Cherry of Washington and a sister, Beverly C. Nowarah of Plymouth.

The family will receive friends 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Tuesday August 18, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home of Mr. Shelton's son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Brandis Cherry located at 111 Iron Mine Way, the Iron Creek Subdivision of Washington.
